Six local workplaces are included on Forbes 2023 list of New York’s best employers. The 88-organization New York best-employer list includes private companies, nonprofits and municipalities.

The University of Rochester Medical Center has the highest rank among Rochester organizations included on magazine’s 2023 New York list.

Other Rochester companies and organizations ranked by the magazine as best workplaces in the state are Excellus, Wegmans, Paychex, Rochester Institute of Technology and UR’s River Campus, which Forbes ranked separately from URMC.

URMC tops the local list at 11th best. Excellus is ranked 14th, Wegmans earned the 22nd spot, Paychex placed 53rd and RIT is 77th. UR’s River Campus placed 83rd.

To compile its annual national list of best employers, Forbes worked with the market research firm Statista, which surveyed 70,000 workers. Only organizations with 500 or more employees were considered.

Survey participants were asked if they would recommend their employer to others and to rate working conditions, diversity, compensation packages, potential for development, company image and other factors.

The magazine complemented its national list of best employers with a state-by-state breakdown on the theory that some job seekers would weigh closeness to home as a key factor in deciding where to look for work.

The number of companies the magazine ranked on each state’s list varies. On the state lists, companies headquartered outside of states that employ more than 500 workers in a given state are ranked alongside state-based companies and organizations. Thus, companies like Apple that have sizable operations in a number of states appear on multiple state lists.

On the New York list, for example, Forbes ranks Washington, D.C.-based Amtrak, which employs 17,100 in New York, as this state’s second-best employer. The magazine counts Long Island-based Mastercard, which employs 10,166 in New York, as the state’s best employer.

Nearby companies and organizations that made the magazine’s New York list include Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center of Buffalo, which is ranked the state’s third best workplace; 12th ranked SUNY Buffalo; Steuben County-headquartered Corning, which ranked 46th; and Syracuse’s Upstate Medical, ranked by Forbes as the state’s 54th best employer.
