Rochesterians have a few more days to see the “Drawings as Discovery: 500 Years of Drawings and Watercolors from MAG’s Permanent Collection” at the Memorial Art Gallery.

The exhibit, which opened in September, closes on Jan. 12. It features more than 100 works from the museum’s collection of over 2,000 drawings. The exhibition brings together works across cultures and time periods to underscore that drawing is at the heart of creativity.

Works by Edgar Degas, Georgia O’Keefe, Francisco Goya, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Kara Walker are featured alongside other lesser-known artists with noteworthy creations. The exhibition also showcases the use of a variety of media and strategies used by artists.

“The exhibition explores diverse drawings through the lens of artistic discovery rather than through academic categories, increasing accessibility to the delight and inspiration that comes from looking at exceptional works of art,” MAG notes.

The drawings and watercolors are grouped thematically with programming and activities to allow visitors of all ages and abilities to connect with the art. An interactive in-gallery drawing studio with supplies, still-life setups and a community wall for display invites visitors to try their hand at art.

On Jan. 5, Going for Baroque, a weekly series of mini-recitals, will entertain guests at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Students from the Eastman School of Music perform with professional musicians on the fully restored Italian Baroque organ in the Fountain Court on the second floor of the museum.
