United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 26 nonprofits with an eye toward operational efficiency and program impact.
Through the “Creating Synergy for a Stronger Future Grant,” funds will support 28 projects focused on critical capacity-building efforts that enhance organizational health, vitality, and long-term sustainability, officials say.
“The grant applications were solutions to real organizational and community challenges,” says Robert De Leon, senior director of community impact and interim chief impact officer at United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes. “Every request represented a nonprofit working to strengthen its foundation so it can better serve those who depend on its programs.
“While we’re proud to invest over $1 million, the demand shows us how much more support is needed. If we had the resources to fund every project, we could have addressed countless challenges holding back our region’s nonprofit sector.”
In total, 135 agencies submitted 223 project applications requesting nearly $9 million in funds. According to United Way, it demonstrates the critical gaps in organizational capacity that impact nonprofits’ ability to serve their communities.
Funded projects focus on key areas including technology and systems upgrades, leadership and board development, organizational development, strategic planning, merger and affiliation initiatives, United Way says.
“When we strengthen our nonprofit partners, we strengthen our entire community. Every dollar we put into organizational capacity means better services, more efficient operations, and ultimately, more people helped,” says De Leon.
