Surrounded and empowered by community, Adam Eaton is showcasing his fine art book project, “Black Is Beautiful.”

Published earlier this year, “Black Is Beautiful” is the culmination of Eaton’s creative journey since he chose to pursue photography as a career in 2019.

“I knew that creativity was important for my life and for my well-being, and so photography became that for me,” says Eaton. “I believe every person should have something creative that they do.”

For Eaton, choosing to center the book on Black beauty stemmed from a conversation he had with a model who said she would be made fun of for the color of her skin.

The book features a variety of Black models with different hairstyles, skin types, and relationships. These showcase Black beauty through a human-centered lens. The series of model portraits spans five years of Eaton’s work, connecting with and featuring the community.

“It’s really just the idea that everyone is beautiful,” notes Eaton. “Every person has something unique about them that makes them beautiful. That’s what I want to portray in my art.”

Eaton, surrounded by friends and supporters, launched his book earlier this year from his art studio at the Anderson Arts Building. He describes the journey here as one of community, of simply practicing his craft by meeting people and learning about their lives.

“It’s always an overwhelming feeling to be loved,” he adds. “To see (the work) manifest … I didn’t always feel that way, but I really do believe that the Rochester community loves me.”

Eaton will exhibit his work at Geva Theatre on April 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
