While he acknowledges the Rochester City School District faces numerous difficult challenges, Superintendent Eric Rosser says he is determined to improve outcomes for its nearly 22,000 city school students and encouraged by the progress he has seen in his first year on the job.
On April 17, the Beacon presented an hourlong online conversation with Rosser—who became superintendent last July—covering a range of topics including the district’s growing budget gap, historically lagging graduation rates, absenteeism, the growing share of city students in charter schools, and more.
The discussion was hosted by Jacob Schermerhorn, who covers the Rochester school district for the Beacon.
A recording of the entire conversation with Rosser can now be viewed.

IDEA – CONTESTS IDEA CONTESTS IDEA CONTESTS
============================================
Rochester Schools could have IDEA CONTESTS, to invite people to submit MOTIVATING ideas to help students achieve rapid progress. Again, I suggest the use of simple devices, like the EASY button, from Staples, and the creation of MOTIVATIONAL web pages.
=================================================================
Good ideas can come from anywhere, from experience, books, etc. If not now, when?
Superintendent Rosser, we are waiting for you to open the door, to new ideas 1
=====================================================
Can’t agree. In education, as in most areas, good ideas only come from the tiny minority of people who know what the hell they’re talking about. Asking for “ideas” from the general public will garner mostly rants, and a large number of individuals who will be honked-off because their “ideas” weren’t accepted. The people to ask for ideas are the administrators and teachers at schools who have successfully dealt with the problems that the RCSD is currently experiencing.
WHAT MOTIVATES WORKS, WHETHER FROM TEACHERS or the PUBLIC
======================================================
Thanks Len, but why not ASK everyone for ideas and TEST them out for results?
Again, I invite schools to put up motivating ideas ONLINE, right now to all to use.
BROADCAST good advice, as I have done online: http://www.SavingSchools.org .

MOOD backwards spells DOOM . Our moods vary up and down, hour by hour…
Again, I would encourage Dr. ROSSER to reach out to the public, over and over
I listened to every word. I find it difficult to be negative on the RCSD but….I have been trained well by them to be just that by the RCSD/SCSB and Adam Urbanski’s team. I couldn’t find a hopeful moment in the hour long session. The SYSTEM needs to be changed. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results won’t get you there. 75% of the students come from a single parent situation. That means that parental support will be, for the most part missing. It’s called generational poverty. You have to teach the way kids learn. Boring them with those perceived boring academics…..bores them to doing poorly and in way too many cases dropping out. The urban population has a disadvantage and that needs to be addressed with creativity. Now if you, Adam Urbanski, are saying we are doing the best we can…..or maybe we could go another round with your “sensibility” and you proclaim that if you pay us more the success will have a greater chance. Mmmm, where have I heard that before? It’s one thing or the other, the system is incapable of teaching the way kids learn or…or urban kids a uneducable. Which is it Dr. Eric Rosser? A or B. Semper Fi.
First Thank you to Jacob and the Rochester Beacon for creating this opportunity for Superintendent Rosser to share his thoughts.
I will go right to the point = Rosser’s spent way to much time on how he spends his time = fighting for Budget, District financial problems, gaps in funding, problems with Charters, but basically NO TIME on a priority to improve test scores so the 28,000 students that he is responsible for will have the ability to join the workforce and be productive citizen when they graduate or leave the RCSD.
I say to Superintendent Rosser, you are running a Business with the mission to Educate the 28,000 students in the RCSD. You have employees that work for you and silo groups – Teachers Union, School Board, City Administration that you have engage with to reach YOUR GOALS. You also have your ‘customers’ – students and families that expect educational performance. As a leader of a business, PLEASE tell your customers that everyday you are focused on educational performance! That you will deliver a measurable improvement over the next 5 years – maybe 75% of students will achieve NYS average test scores in Math & ELA.
Your thoughts, please. Not for me but for your ‘customers’ to know.
Thank you.
DR.ROSSER SPECIFICS lacking on how to improve LEARNING and TEACHING at RCSD
============================================================
Thanks, again for this revealing interview. But where are the SPECIFIC IDEAS and TOOLS?
Again, I suggest using online MOTIVATIONAL ideas for students, teachers and parents.
Again, I mention my crude page: http://www.SavingSchools.org and devices like the EASY button.
==============================================================
Perhaps, RCSD needs some COMMON SENSE advice, to WAKE UP, WEAK students, now. TX
Dr. Rosser might invite commenters on this page, to share their IDEAS, with RCSD, right now.
