Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and her Republicans colleagues are choosing to turn a strong economy into a recession. President Trump and Republicans inherited an economy that was considered the “envy of the world,” according to the Economist magazine. Inflation was falling, wages, consumer spending, and corporation profits were rising, and unemployment was low. Just three months in-office and economists from Goldman Sachs, Moody’s Analytics, Wells Fargo, and others are predicting a significant slowdown in economic activity with J.P. Morgan saying that the risk of a recession this year is at 60 percent. Ms. Tenney and her colleagues can vote to end the emergency powers the President is using to impose recession-inducing tariffs, and the Executive Orders he is using to cut the Department of Education, U.S. Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well as massive layoffs at Health and Human Services, Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration and other agencies. It is her constituents that will be hurt by these policies. Farmers in her district will pay more for fertilizer, and lose markets to sell their commodities, consumers in her district will pay more for groceries; meanwhile unemployment will increase, and veteran services will be cut in Batavia and Canandaigua, both in her district. Congress, not the President, has the authority to levy tariffs and Congress, not the President, has the power to end agencies such as the U.S.A.I.D. or the Department of Education. It is her job to be a check and balance on the executive branch of government especially when that Executive pushes policies that are economically harming her constituents. Her constituents elected her to be their voice in Washington, to put forth their concerns. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney is abdicating her responsibilities.

Considering that many of the EOs have been judged illegal or unconstitutional, and he is openly defying the courts when ordered to comply an impeachment rather than just “voting for not being economically suicidal” seems in order. Republican representatives are craven, irresponsible and immoral. We must vote every one of them out of office at every opportunity both locally and nationally.
“The Economist Magazine” “Predicting a significant slowdown”? Frankly I’d give more credibility to the Channel 8 weather forecast. A lot of angst here for a gloomy economy that hasn’t occurred? I’m starting to believe in the concept of Trump Derangement Syndrome. I’m shocked that so many people and entities are defending the Federal bureaucracy and the status quo. Not one dollar can be cut? Not one bureaucrat can be furloughed? Its that sacred? Obviously people that have naively come to that conclusion have never worked for a real company that is expected by its shareholders to provide a acceptable return on investment with real money (not taxpayer money that seems to be printed or grown on trees) . It seems obvious to me that’s what is going on here (standard business practices applied to the Federal bureaucracy. ) A lot of people would disagree that the last Administration was a bastion of good economics. If they had their way, you’d still be wearing a mask, working at home and wouldn’t be allowed to mingle unless you were vaccinated per their schedule. Not to mention unaffordable cars and houses. We’ve forgotten what a manufacturing center our region use to be . Pick any major 2 lane artery around here (I use Route 31 as a example) . Drive 75 miles in either direction and count the dozens of closed, abandon, factories and warehouses. A massive trade deficit exists from printed money shipped out of the country. Thats what the status quo did to CNY and US manufacturing. Nobody seemed to have any issue when the last Admin used the power of the Feds to force a Semiconductor industry into the Syracuse area. The price of oil (a major ingredient of fertilizer btw) has collapsed this year, I think Claudia’s constituents will be grateful.
Thank you for this excellent assessment of Tenney’s abdication of responsibility, in fact all of the Republican controlled House and Senate bowing to the authoritarian instincts of this president. The damage they are doing will last for at least a generation. This is not the America where I grew up. The very idea of America having been “great” in the past is because of programs and people that are being cut.
Amen, brother!
