The planet deserves our best

I am a member of Citizens Climate Lobby Rochester, a national organization focused on climate advocacy. I see almost daily how unsettling the rapid changes impacting our way of life can be, many of which relate to a warming climate, weather extremes and government insistence on promoting fossil fuels rather than renewable sources of energy. Many such organizations lead the fight to restore the planet to wholeness, and in so doing, restore ourselves to wholeness and community with all life. But today, I write as an individual asking each of us to do more.

The competing priorities facing us can be overwhelming. Not everyone has the scientific background to challenge current practice. But each of us has a connection to nature that is personal and heartfelt. Whether sitting by a window, tending a garden or walking along a nature trail, we are embraced by something larger than ourselves and return from the journey refreshed and at peace. Such experiences renew the spirit and remind us of our capacity to step back, pause, and re-imagine a future that brings hope and possibility.

Each of us has skills that make a difference to others, whether writing, research, recycling, organizing, phoning or sharing a story through social media. Connecting with others is empowering. It reduces isolation, builds relationships and reminds us of our capacity to make a difference. There are many ways to participate in what’s important to all of us—the environment. I offer just a sampling below, and encourage you to explore a new undertaking in addition to any current involvements. You will feel better by learning and growing and by encouraging others to do likewise.

  • Read the Monroe County Climate Action plan and share with a friend.
  • Organize a neighborhood cleanup.
  • Find out where your legislators stand on climate issues.
  • Join one of many environmental groups and become better informed.
  • Become aware of native pollinator plants good for the garden and public spaces.

May the list spark your imagination by combining your skills and interests with needs in your community. Start where you are with the resources available to you. It is important not to let powerful forces control what is vital to all of us. Not everyone feels safe enough to speak up. By joining with others who care about the environment, we encourage more voices to join us and be heard. 1. If the planet is your concern, maybe, just maybe, some of that concern should be aimed at a successful K-12 educational journey. You see after you have left this planet, that generation, that mental mindset will be in charge. Guess what? At today’s graduation rate in the Rochester City School District, the planet will be ignored. You have to address the K-12 education because that is the future. All five of your points of action are post K-12. You have to build that attitude on a solid foundation. That desired foundation doesn’t exist. Decades of failure. So if your mission is climate etc. address the RCSD and demand positive results. I could go on and on as in building sidewalks, bicycle paths etc. That is the foundation toward a climate concern.
