Every now and then we need a true feel-good story, and have I got one for you.
I moved to Rochester about 3 1/2 years ago and met a woman named Ellen, along with a crew of wonderful new friends.
Ellen has a daughter named Anna and, well, Anna needed a kidney. At 35, she was suffering from Polycystic kidney disease. So Ellen had lawn signs made that say “My sweet daughter needs a kidney. If you can help, please call Ellen at” and listed her phone number. She had magnetic signs made that many of her friends put on their cars. She did get calls responding to the signs as well as having herself tested at two hospitals to see if she could be a donor. The signs drew enough attention that she and Anna were interviewed about Anna’s need on local station Channel 10.
On Friday, July 24, I woke up to a text that Ellen sent at 5:48 am saying that Anna was getting a kidney. That day!
I’m writing this because, while the world is in a mess these days, I hope this helps some of us realize that there is good that happens. And generosity. And also to point to the need for organ and blood donors. Some of you may have seen Ellen’s signs; there are real people behind the plea for organ donations. I’m grateful to know a mother and daughter who had a need filled.

This is a beautiful letter written by my good friend,Ruth, who very accurately summarized my daughter’s need for, and receipt of, a kidney transplant. This has been quite an emotional journey full of fear, physical pain and enormous gratitude. Please consider registering as an organ donor because the gift of an organ can provide new life for someone. I thank my friend for submitting this missive on our behalf.
