Elders & Allies to Free the People Roc believes housing justice is racial justice. We join Citizen Action in calling on the legislature and County Executive Bello to address the housing crisis.
The county’s rental assistance programs are a tangled web, causing confusion, discouragement, shame, and, ultimately, failure to obtain adequate housing.
Secondly, there is NOT ENOUGH—not enough subsidized or public housing units, Section 8 vouchers, or financial assistance.Tenant-based rental assistance is often inadequate, especially the NYS Shelter Allowance. While the State’s Rental Supplement Program helps, the county’s current portion of this additional assistance helps only 300 families bridge the affordability gap. The waiting lists for public housing and Section 8 Housing Choice vouchers are years long.
Elders & Allies urges the Monroe County Legislature to pass the pilot Add-On to the Shelter Allowance proposed by Citizen Action, and include funding in the upcoming budget.
