Donate to Double the Impact

The Rochester Beacon again is taking part in NewsMatch, the nation’s largest grassroots fundraising campaign for nonprofit news. The campaign matches, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 per individual donor.

NewsMatch 2020 runs Nov. 1 through Dec. 31—so please considering donating and doubling your impact! (Only donations made during that period are eligible for the dollar-for-dollar match.)

Why is this so important? Because as a 501(c)3 nonprofit journalism venture, the Rochester Beacon relies on contributions from members of the community to make our work possible. Your support will help sustain free access to our high-quality, nonpartisan, locally focused public affairs journalism.

How to Donate

The easiest way to donate is via PayPal or credit card. Starting Sunday, Nov. 1, you can just click on the button below. (Important note: While we appreciate all donations, the only ones eligible for the NewsMatch dollar-for-dollar match are those made by individuals—personally, or through a business you own, a family foundation or donor-advised fund.)

Or write a check payable to Rochester Beacon Inc.

Mail your check to: Rochester Beacon, 312 Susquehanna Road, Rochester, NY 14618

More about NewsMatch

Local and national foundations provide gifts to the Fund for Nonprofit News, hosted at the Miami Foundation. The fund then matches every dollar that newsrooms raise from individual donors during the NewsMatch campaign, up to an initial cap of $11,500 per participating nonprofit news organization. (The cap may be increased during the campaign.) Donations made through a small business, foundation or donor-advised fund are eligible for the match if they can reasonably be seen as coming from an individual.

The Rochester Beacon is one of more than 260 nonprofit news organizations participating in NewsMatch 2020—a 35 percent increase compared with a year ago. All are full members of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a nationwide membership group of more than 100 media organizations.

NewsMatch is supported by Democracy Fund, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Facebook Journalism Project, the Bernard and Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust, the Inasmuch Foundation, the Independence Public Media Foundation, the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, Natasha and Dirk Ziff, the Present Progressive Fund at Schwab Charitable, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Wyncote Foundation, along with supporting partners across the U.S. The Miami Foundation is the fiscal sponsor. INN and the News Revenue Hub are nonprofit partners.

Donor Transparency

We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics, and special projects. Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors. We do not give supporters the right to assign, review or edit content.

We will make public all donors who give $5,000 or more per year. As a nonprofit, we will avoid accepting donations from anonymous sources, and we will not accept donations from government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates actively seeking public office. We also will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
